What are heat pumps?

Heat pumps are a form of renewable technology that converts energy  from the air or ground into heat. It delivers super efficient, low-cost, energy-saving heating and hot water all year round.

A Heat Pump works very efficiently in its own right and coupled with the right controls can produce energy at a 1-4 ratio.

This means that for every 1kW of electricity a Heat pump consumes you get a return of 4 kW of heat energy to use in the home. Making it on par with gas, if not cheaper when sized right and even better if your home has good insulation. This is suitable for people on oil or LPG or electric.

Hybrid Heat pump

Hybrid Heat pumps

For many in the industry, the hybrid heat pump looks like the next big thing, it may even start a heating revolution. A Hybrid heat pump combines both an Air Source Heat Pump with a gas boiler heating system this makes the heat pump viable for homes on mains gas.

Why? Well, it’s simple really. An air source heat pump is cheaper to run than a gas appliance during the summer months (say from February to November) and a gas boiler is cheaper to run during the winter months, so you get the best of both! A hybrid heat pump creates a super cost effective heating system which works all year round.

A Hybrid heat pump has the ability to automatically monitor and select the most cost-efficient mode of providing heating & hot water to your property at any given time. If the outdoor temperatures are adequate (let’s say anything above 2 degrees) the Heat Pump provides the heat for the property and will be very cost effective.

The clever part is when the outside temperatures reach below 2 – 0℃ the system intelligently switches to the gas boiler, meaning that gas is only relied upon for the very coldest days of the year.

Both types of systems qualify for the RHI (the renewable heat incentive) which looks set to get a boost at some point this year. See who we’ve helped with heat pumps and hybrid heat pumps below.
